Job Description Train to become an Inspector of Weights and Measures Are you looking for an opportunity to begin an interesting and challenging career Do you want a role with a mixture of operational activities, enforcement and market surveillance that is technically stimulating? Permanent opportunity, Wellington or Christchurch based Team and Role Trading Standards is an operational unit within the MBIE responsible for: Ensuring measurements used in trade are accurate for example, packaged goods, shop scales and fuel dispensers; and Monitoring the quality of fuel. As a qualified Trading Standards Officer; you will need to support effective delivery of national trade measurement compliance and operational activities, which ensure that trade in and from New Zealand; is conducted on the basis of fair and accurate measurement and are consistent with internationally accepted standards and best practice. Skills And Experience This role is ideal for someone who has the confidence to deal with members of the public and businesses in a professional manner. Good interpersonal skill combined with the ability to work without direct supervision and using your initiative will also be key requirements for the role. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills with an eye for detail and an interest in ‘how things work'. You must have a good level of physical fitness as there is some heavy lifting of equipment required. It is essential that you also hold a current New Zealand driver's licence and are able to work away from home on occasions. A tertiary or diploma qualification in the areas of engineering, physics or science would be desirable but applicants with a minimum of NCEA Level 3 in mathematics and science will be considered. As a Trainee Trading Standards Officer, you will be given the opportunity to: Receive individualised specialist technical training and coaching to become qualified as an Inspector of Weights and Measures under Section 26 of the Weights and Measures Act 1987 as well as a Fuel Quality Monitoring Officer under Section 35C of the Energy (Fuels, Levies and References) Act 1989; Expand on your customer service skills, technical knowledge and interest in how measurement and quality systems work; Perform duties of Trading Standards Officer under supervision while training; and Be supported in developing your knowledge and skills in responding to complaints by consumers with regards to fuel quality and measurement issues. Once qualified you will be working independently and when needed as part of a dynamic team, responsible for implementing a varied work programme around New Zealand.
