The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago invites applications for the position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Division of Humanities.
Established in 1869, the University of Otago is New Zealand's first university and is home to over 20,000 students. As New Zealand's most research-intensive university, Otago fosters a vigorous research culture and excellence in teaching. Otago's researchers and scholars contribute to leading international discoveries and knowledge, to new commercial developments, and to the health, social and cultural well-being of New Zealand and the wider world.
Encompassing a diverse mix of disciplines and professional programmes, the Division of Humanities makes a vital contribution to research, teaching and learning at the University of Otago. It is comprised on seven academic units: the Faculty of Law, the College of Education, Te Tumu: School of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies, the School of Geography, the School of Performing Arts, the School of Social Sciences and the School of Arts. The Division offers over 40 undergraduate subjects and has just under 5,000 equivalent full-time students and close to 300 staff.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor, and provides leadership in a collaborative academic environment, while advancing the Division's commitment to excellence in research-led teaching and the provision of an enriching student experience. As a member of the University senior leadership team, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor also contributes to the wider University's strategy and development.
The successful applicant for this role will be a leading academic with an outstanding international record of peer-reviewed publications. Strong candidates for the position will also have a demonstrated record of academic leadership, display strong interpersonal skills, a genuine interest in others, an open communication style, clear decision-making ability and a collegial leadership style. It is imperative that the successful applicant is able to champion the cause of the Humanities in the public arena.
