Job role
We are looking for an energetic and skilled programme manager, with interests and knowledge of housing and urban planning to help project manage an enthusiastic group of 40 researchers in two- linked research groups centred at the University of Otago, Wellington.
He Kainga Oranga/ Housing and Health Research Programme and the New Zealand Centre for Sustainable Cities research teams are led by Sesquicentennial Distinguished Professor Philippa Howden-Chapman and Associate Professor Nevil Pierse. They are based in the University of Otago, Wellington. The multi-disciplinary team includes social researchers with expertise in both qualitative and quantities disciplines, economists, engineers, physicists and Māori and Pasifika researchers. The teams have established wide national and international research links.
The role
We are looking for an experienced Research Programme Manager to lead the coordination of the research strategy for the programme by identifying factors that promote cohesion between participating scientific and community teams, including liaison with key stakeholders, in particular Māori, pacific partners and collaborators. The breadth of activity in this scientific programme (encompassing social science, policy, governance, economics, statistics architecture with an emphasis on congruence with Te Ao Māori), offers an exciting opportunity for the Programme Manager to provide oversight and direction to a new, high profile and cutting-edge area of research which will benefit New Zealand.
As the Research Programme Manager, you will work with academic staff at the Department of Public Health, University of Otago, Wellington and our research partners. As a superior multi-tasker, you will relish being part of an intellectually stimulating environment that will draw on, challenge and enhance your project management and communication skills.
The role is based in the Department of Public Health, Wellington, but will require liaison with staff across the University's three campuses.
In this varied role, you will work with highly focused research staff on research management tasks such as:
Lead the coordination and smooth running of the programme.
Oversee and manage day-to-day operations.
Coordinate strategic planning processes.
Build and maintain effective relationships with the programme team including researchers and clinicians, stakeholders and partners in order to maximise programme delivery and success.
Organise and run stakeholder meetings.
Record the decision-making and iterative evolution of the research programme as it tests and adopts or discards approaches, ideas and tools to deliver the KPIs that inform this programme's success.
Effectively manage, coordinate and monitor programme and project activities to ensure KPI and milestone delivery in accordance with agreed targets.
Oversee a seven-figure budget.
Ensure reports are completed on time and to a high standard, including delivery of a final report on research, with recommendations for future research and investment.
Ensure that the reporting and oversight requirements of the funder and partners are met.
Your skills and experience
The ideal candidate will have a range of skills and experience.
Essential:
A postgraduate qualification (MSc, PhD or equivalent) or significant experience in a similar capacity in a relevant policy area, particularly housing, urban system or science-related research speciality.
Familiarity and expertise with the principles, culture and tikanga within Te Ao Māori.
Track record of successful management of medium to large multidisciplinary projects or programmes.
Experience in a population or environmental research environment Demonstrated experience of working positively and effectively with Māori organisations.
Experience in writing research reports.
Desirable:
Experience in research management (8 years+), preferably within New Zealand Universities or Crown Research Institute (CRI) sectors, or within an environment with links to those sectors.
Experience managing geographically dispersed projects or programmes involving multiple organisations.
Familiarity with ethical and regulatory requirements in a community setting.
An understanding of public housing, and wellbeing outcomes including carbon mitigation Familiarity with Integrated Data Infrastructure.
Literacy in information science, its structure and underpinning principles and/or experience managing projects with an IT component.
