What You Will Do
Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation), you will be a highly motivated individual with extensive research knowledge and experience, a thought-leader with strong executive management experience to develop and implement research initiatives aligned to UC's strategic vision. Leading a large and diverse team, you will contribute to all aspects of planning, policy, performance and operational support for research and innovation activities.
Who You Are
The successful candidate will have extensive experience in a leadership role and understanding of growing a portfolio of high-quality university research, and the importance of demonstrating its impact. You will be confident with systems of research and innovation in New Zealand, including issues facing the tertiary education sector, to be able to pre-empt and prepare for potential strategic themes and areas of changing national and international importance.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD (desirable), or at least ten-year's experience in research management and have:
extensive knowledge of research funding landscapes, and process of building research collaborations and delivery of research
experience in competitive research proposal development across a spectrum of Government and industry sources
able to demonstrate strong people leadership and vision
an enterprising strategic perspective and ability to be a "considered disruptor", committed to making a difference
skills in innovation and knowledge of transfer and commercialisation, including deal and contract negotiation
a genuine commitment to work collaboratively with colleagues to foster equity and diversity and to meet the obligations of the Treaty of Waitangi
exceptional communication strategies to enhance relationships between various stakeholder groups.

The Research & Innovation team are a professional service team who passionately and proactively contribute to the growth and development of UC's research portfolio so as to enhance UC's reputation of undertaking excellent and impactful research. The role of Research & Innovation is to provide end-to-end services which facilitate and support all stages of research and innovation, including enhancing and promoting the economic, environmental and societal impact of UC's research, and commercialisation. This new Director role will provide strategic leadership to this critical service team to grow the size, impact, and reputation of UC's research portfolio.

The University of Canterbury (Māori: Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha; postnominal abbreviation Cantuar. or Cant. for Cantuariensis, the Latin name for Canterbury) is New Zealand's second oldest university (after the University of Otago, itself founded four years earlier in 1869).
It was founded in 1873 as Canterbury College, the first constituent college of the University of New Zealand. Its original campus was in the Christchurch Central City, but in 1961 it became an independent university and began moving out of its original neo-gothic buildings, which were re-purposed as the Christchurch Arts Centre. The move was completed on 1 May 1975[2] and the university now operates its main campus in the Christchurch suburb of Ilam and offers degrees in Arts, Commerce, Education (physical education), Engineering, Fine Arts, Forestry, Health Sciences, Law, Music, Social Work, Speech and Language Pathology, Science, Sports Coaching and Teaching. Music and classics are again taught from the Christchurch Arts Centre [3] and within the new Manawa building in Christchurch city health and education are taught.
