Embassy of Oman in Berlin
The Sultanate of Oman is located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, which is oriented towards the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Oman shares the state borders in the southwest with Yemen, in the west with Saudi Arabia and in the northwest with the United Arab Emirates. Over 3.2 million people live in Oman on an area of around 309,500 km². The local representation of the sultanate is mainly carried out by the embassy in Berlin.
Oman in general
It could be proven that the area, which is now enclosed by the sultanate, was already settled in the Stone Age. In recent history, the east of the Arabian Peninsula has been a target for various colonial powers. The Portuguese were the first to assert claims on this area. However, their rule ended in the middle of the 17th century.
About 100 years later, in 1746, the Bu Saʿīd dynasty was founded. This still prevails in Oman today. At the end of the 18th century the influence of the British in Oman increased - primarily through the East India Company. The economic boom of the sultanate ebbed in the middle of the 19th century. The British were stationed in Oman until the second half of the 20th century.
Entry, stay, exit
There are a few things to consider when traveling to the east of the Arabian Peninsula. As always: different countries, different customs. But you should also keep an eye on the geography, the climate, the culture, the religion and, last but not least, the bureaucracy and jurisdiction in an emergency.
Adults and children must be able to present their own passport to enter the Sultanate, which is valid for at least six months after arrival. A visa must also be obtained. This can be arranged after the flight has arrived in the capital, Muscat. Depending on the length of stay and the frequency of entry over a certain period of time, the visa can cost 12 to 120 euros per person.
The importation of medicines must first be checked for necessity and secondly justified with multilingual medical letters. At least when it comes to psychoactive drugs (psychotropic drugs) and pain relievers. Because the import of drugs, the possession and also the trade in them are treated as very serious offenses in Oman.
The religion is highly respected in Oman and should not be disregarded by visitors. Photos of religious sites are allowed if there are no believers in them. You should also only take photos of people themselves with their consent. The military and police officers are not allowed to be photographed.
The Federal Foreign Office provides detailed information, including on travel in and out of the country, on its website.
