This method was born in Japan around 1920, shi translates to finger and atsu by pressure, it was introduced in its primitive form (anmo in Chinese, anma in Japanese) during the importation into Japan of traditional Chinese medicine (zhong yi ) around 200 AD. After the opening of Japan in the 1890s to Europe, shiatsu met the massage of modern Western medicine, around 1910 the American techniques of chiropractic, osteopathy and spondylotherapy were introduced in Japan and came to bring an influence to this method. It was in 1955 that shiatsu was recognized in Japan as a therapy. Different schools were born, the best known are the nihon shiatsu school of Toru Namikoshi and the zen shiatsu of Shizuto Masunaga. In France, masters of Japanese martial arts or therapists taught it, which allowed its development. Currently shiatsu is dispensed therapeutically by professionals or in a family setting for well-being.
